The last five months have been pretty intense. Creating a 164-page magazine from scratch is an enormous project and, looking back, I’m happy that I was naïve enough to think it could be done. Along with href="http://twitter.com/carywood">Carolyn Wood and href="http://workingformat.com">Working Format we think we’ve created something very special indeed.
class="noborder" href="http://codexmag.com">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/codex-cover.png" alt="" title="codex-cover" width="500" height="341" class="pad" />
I’d also like to thank href="http://mailchimp.com">MailChimp for their generous support. Now that the first issue of href="http://shop.codexmag.com/products/issue-1">Codex magazine is on its way to the printer, I can take a breather (a few days until work resumes on issue #2), and list here some of the type-related things that have been catching my eye. Yes, it has been a while, but here is the week — perhaps the month — in type.
I already have too many pictures and posters, but couldn’t resist buying this one (the one on the right):
class="noborder" href="http://www.atipo.bigcartel.com/">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/fontface05.jpg" alt="" title="fontface poster" width="500" height="372" class="pad" />

Available from href="http://www.atipo.bigcartel.com/">atipo in Spain. And I almost forgot to mention that I’ve convinced atipo to give one away to an ILT reader. Just tell us why you want or need the poster and we’ll select a lucky winner. I will announce the winner on Monday via href="http://twitter.com/ilovetypography">twitter.
href="http://fittextjs.com/">FixText, a very clever jQuery plugin for resizing web type on the fly:
class="noborder" href="http://fittextjs.com/">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-12-at-2.45.17-PM-500x408.png" alt="" title="FixText" width="500" height="408" class="padb" />
Nice use of Font Bureau’s href="http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/Giza/">Giza and href="http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/GriffithGothic/">Griffith Gothic in Pentagram’s work for the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Hard to beat fat Egyptian numerals when they’re displayed at these sizes:

Great to see href="http://ilovetypography.com/2008/05/01/face-to-face-an-interview-with-nadine-chahine/">Nadine Chahine’s custom type (Gebran2005) in the redesign of An-Nahar, Lebanon’s leading daily newspaper (left: before; right: after):

Great new site from href="http://www.ableparris.com/">Able Parris. I’m a big fan of his collages:
class="noborder" href="http://www.ableparris.com/">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-12-at-3.06.02-PM-500x408.png" alt="" title="Able Parris" width="500" height="408" class="padb" />
Long overdue, but looking great, and so much easier to navigate: the new href="https://www.fontfont.com/">FontFont site.
class="noborder" href="https://www.fontfont.com/">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-12-at-3.07.48-PM-500x354.png" alt="" title="FontFont" width="500" height="354" class="padb" />

Two great href="http://typecamp.org/">Type Camps coming up. One in href="http://typecamp.org/california2011.html">California Wine Country (12–17 June 2011); the other held at the Bauhaus campus in Weimar! (30 July –4 August 2011). Places limited, so hurry.
Last chance to sign up for the href="http://legacyofletters.com/">Legacy of Letters tour. Eight days in Italy; eights days of type. You have until May 20th:

Great to see type designers embracing dribble. Among them, French type design legend, href="http://dribbble.com/typofonderie">Jean François Porchez:
class="noborder" href="http://dribbble.com/typofonderie">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-12-at-3.14.36-PM-500x390.png" alt="" title="dribbble" width="500" height="390" class="padb" />
/> Wish dribble had twitter-like lists or groups, so that I could share such a list with others. [hint, hint]
Some beauties in these excerpts from Sanborn fire-insurance maps (wasn’t aware such things existed). Love this title-page:
class="noborder" href="http://bibliodyssey.blogspot.com/2011/02/sanborn-fire-insurance-map-typography.html">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/title-page.jpg" alt="" title="title-page" width="500" height="594" class="padb" />
/> Plenty more over at href="http://bibliodyssey.blogspot.com/2011/02/sanborn-fire-insurance-map-typography.html">BibliOdyssey.

This looks fantastic. Yes, I know, it’s not about typography, but imagine the possibilities. Moving, animated, or so-called kinetic typography. Can’t wait to see it released. href="http://animatable.com/">Animatable:

Oliver Reichenstein asks ‘href="http://www.informationarchitects.jp/en/business-class-news/">Business Class: Freemium for News?’ I’m wondering if there is a more appropriate analogy — something more analogous — but the concept is inspired.

A new type specimen book from href="http://www.jblt.co/fonts/specimen">Jean-Baptiste Levée. 569 pages. 1.7 kg:

One of the latest additions to my own type library is Christian Schwartz’s href="http://www.linotype.com/808330/neuehaasgrotesk-family.html">Neue Haas Grotesk:
class="noborder" href="http://www.linotype.com/808330/neuehaasgrotesk-family.html">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/neue-haas-grotesk.png" alt="" title="neue-haas-grotesk" width="500" height="500" class="alignright size-full wp-image-10658" />
Great range of weights. Particularly like the idea of the additional three weights drawn specifically for texts.
A new and very accomplished humanist sans serif from H&FJ. Meet href="http://www.typography.com/fonts/font_overview.php?productLineID=100042">Ideal Sans:
class="noborder" href="http://www.typography.com/fonts/font_overview.php?productLineID=100042">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/05/ideal-sans-crop.png" alt="" title="ideal-sans" width="500" height="300" class="pad" />
I have no idea if this will be available as a webfont when H&FJ launches its service, but I reckon it would prove very popular.

And, finally, I think this little company needs to work on their branding/typography/lettering/spelling:
