MOMA on the money

class="byline">The week in type

Hope you enjoy this week’s week in type. To kick things off, lets all give a warm hand to the makers and bakers of the fonts that made it into href="http://moma.org/explore/inside_out/2011/01/24/digital-fonts-23-new-faces-in-moma-s-collection">MOMA’s permanent collection. Particularly happy yo see Barry Deck’s href="http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/emigre/template-gothic/">Template Gothic in there — one of my all-time favorite quirky display types.

Be sure to read Jonathan Hoefler’s thoughts over at the exceptional href="http://kottke.org/11/01/moma-acquires-digital-typefaces-what-does-that-mean">Kottke. H&FJ see four of their types added to the collection: HTF Didot, Gotham, Mercury and Retina.

New types

The lovely new href="http://www.linotype.com/6502/cartersans.html">Carter Sans from Matthew Carter. Available from Linotype:

class="noborder" href="http://www.linotype.com/6502/cartersans.html">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/01/carter-sans.png" alt="" title="carter sans fonts" width="500" height="500" class="pads" />

Looks especially good in all-caps settings./> id="more-10367">/> Juliet Shen’s href="http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/Bullen/">Bullen, available from Font Bureau:

class="noborder" href="http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/Bullen/">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/01/bullen.png" alt="" title="bullen fonts" width="495" height="583" class="pads" />

Complete with an italic aspiring to be a script.

On the money with LettError’s href="http://www.letterror.com/catalog/fed/order_12.html">LTR Federal:

class="noborder" href="http://www.letterror.com/catalog/fed/order_12.html">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/01/LTR-Federal.png" alt="" title="LTR-Federal" width="500" height="410" class="padb" />

Added to my growing font shopping list.

href="http://www.type-together.com/Pollen">Pollen by Brazilian designer Eduardo Berliner. Available from Typetogether. Three fonts: regular, italic, and bold. And be sure to take a look at href="http://www.type-together.com/downloadFile.php?file=resources/_pdfs/Pollen.pdf">Pollen’s PDF specimen.

class="noborder" href="http://www.type-together.com/Pollen">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/01/pollen.png" alt="" title="pollen fonts" width="500" height="661" class="pads" />

A taste of Art Nouveau, with Typonine’s newly released href="http://www.typonine.com/fonts/delvard/">Delvard:

class="noborder" href="http://www.typonine.com/fonts/delvard/">src="http://cdn.ilovetypography.com/img/2011/01/delvard.png" alt="" title="delvard" width="500" height="703" class="pads" />

Some great work over at href="http://www.sincerelyross.com/index.php?/projects/jws60-book/">Ross Milne’s site, including this custom lettering that I’m particularly fond of:

I have a copy of href="http://www.archive.org/details/earlyvenetianpri00onga">Early Venetian Printing Illustrated in my library. It’s difficult to find, as it’s been out of print for decades; but it is available on href="http://www.archive.org/details/earlyvenetianpri00onga">Archive.org. You can view it online, or download the PDF. Hundreds of facsimiles of woodcut initials and decorative borders.

This one printed by Bernardinus de Benaliix in Venice, 1486.
